On match day, the Northern Guard, fans of Detroit City FC, a semi-pro team in the fourth tier of American soccer, gather at Fowling Warehouse for drinks.

An hour before kickoff, they march to Keyworth Stadium, and block off Conant Street in both directions in the process. Leaders of the Guard stop on Conant to address the crowd.

"Happy match day," they say. "If this is, say, your 100th match with us, welcome back! If you're lucky enough to have this be your first match with us, welcome home. And if you're stupid enough to be here and are cheering for [our opponent,] welcome to Hell."
